NAACP History
Founded Feb. 12. 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest, largest and most widely recognized grassroots–based civil rights organization. It’s more than half-million members and supporters throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their
communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and
private sectors.

Our Mission
The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the
political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial
hatred and racial discrimination.

Our Vision
The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure a society
in which all individuals have equal rights and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination.

Sioux City NAACP Chapter
The Sioux City Chapter of the NAACP traces its roots back to 1937 and has been consistently active
in the community since 1947.

The Sioux City Chapter has been very instrumental in partnering with local businesses and city organizations:

  •  Sioux City Public Museum donation toward their capital campaign
  •  Naming of the Martin Luther King Transportation Center (Bus transit)
  •  Unveiling of the MLK Bust located at the Martin Luther King Transportation Center
  •  Collaboration with Sioux City Schools and Achievement
  •  Partners with Council on Sexual assault in Domestic Violence
  •  Juneteenth Partnership with City Human Rights Commission
  •
